A alta recente do dólar e as incertezas em torno da inflação fizeram o Banco Central (BC) elevar os juros pela primeira vez em mais de dois anos. Por unanimidade, o Comitê de Política Monetária (Copom) aumentou a taxa Selic, juros básicos da economia, em 0,25 ponto percentual, para 10,75% ao ano. A decisão era esperada pelo mercado financeiro
A última alta dos juros ocorreu em agosto de 2022, quando a taxa subiu de 13,25% para 13,75% ao ano. Após passar um ano nesse nível, a taxa teve seis cortes de 0,5 ponto e um corte de 0,25 ponto, entre agosto do ano passado e maio deste ano. Nas reuniões de junho e julho, o Copom decidiu manter a taxa em 10,5% ao ano.
Em comunicado, o Copom justificou a alta dos juros baseada nos seguintes fatores: resiliência na atividade econômica, pressões no mercado de trabalho, hiato do produto positivo (economia caminhando para consumir mais que a capacidade de produção), alta das estimativas para a inflação e desancoragem das expectativas de inflação. Em relação ao futuro, o texto foi vago sobre a intensidade e a duração do ciclo de alta dos juros.

A Selic é o principal instrumento do Banco Central para manter sob controle a inflação oficial, medida pelo Índice Nacional de Preços ao Consumidor Amplo (IPCA).
