Nesta quarta-feira (20), o Dia Nacional de Zumbi dos Palmares e da Consciência Negra é celebrado pela primeira vez como feriado nacional. Até 2023 a data era celebrada em apenas seis estados e pouco mais de 1.200 cidades, e passou a ser comemorado em todo o país após a sanção da Lei n° 14.759, em dezembro de 2023, pelo presidente Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
Para o Ministério da Igualdade Racial, a conquista do feriado marca a relevância da cultura e história afro-brasileira para o país. “A celebração em nível nacional é um chamado para que toda a população possa refletir sobre a identidade do Brasil, sobre a importância de valorizar as diferenças e agir coletivamente para que tenhamos uma nação cada vez mais desenvolvida e diversa”, comemora a pasta.
A data de 20 de novembro é um reconhecimento à história de resistência do Quilombo dos Palmares, formado na Serra da Barriga, na então Capitania de Pernambuco, hoje estado de Alagoas, por volta de 1580.
Palmares foi o maior refúgio de negros da América Latina, chegando a reunir 20 mil pessoas, a maioria delas escravizados que fugiram dos engenhos da Bahia e de Pernambuco.
Em 1694, o quilombo foi destruído e, em 20 de novembro do ano seguinte, seu líder, Zumbi dos Palmares, foi assassinado, daí a relevância simbólica da data para a população afrodescendente.
