à Deux, a number of fans of the sequel took to social media over the weekend in defense of the sequel to Todd Phillips’ 2019 motion picture.

The film, which sees Joaquin Phoenix return to the lead role of The Joker/Arthur Fleck, debuted to a paltry $40 million at the
domestic box office, good enough for the weekend’s top spot, but less than projections, and half that

Just three weeks ago, tracking services pegged the movie for a $70
million debut, which would still have been down a
fair amount from Joker’s record-breaking $96.2 million launch in October
2019.

‘That´s a double whammy that´s very difficult to recover from,’ said Paul Dergarabedian, the senior media analyst for Comscore.
‘The biggest issue of all is the reported budget. A $40 or $50 million opening for a less expensive
movie would be a solid debut.’

Joker: Folie à Deux cost at least twice as much as the first film to produce, though reported figures vary at exactly how pricey
it was to make. Phillips told Variety that it was less than the reported $200 million; Others

released the film in 4,102 locations in North America.
About 12.5 percent of its domestic total came from 415 IMAX screens.

Internationally, it’s earned $81.1 million from 25,788 screens, bringing its total global earnings estimate to $121.1
million. In the next two weeks, Joker 2 will also open in Japan and
China.

Second place went to Universal and DreamWorks Animation’s The Wild Robot, which added $18.7 million in its second
weekend, bringing its domestic total to nearly $64 million. Globally,
it’s made over $100 million. Warner Bros.’ Beetlejuice Beetlejuice  took third place in weekend five, Paramount’s Transformers One landed in fourth and Universal and Blumhouse’s Speak
No Evil rounded out the top five.

The other big new release of the weekend, Lionsgate’s
White Bird, flopped with just $1.5 million from just over 1,000 locations, despite an A+ CinemaScore.

Overall, the weekend is up from the same frame last
year, but Joker’s start is an unwelcome twist for theater owners hoping to narrow the box office deficit.

The sequel has already been the subject of many think pieces, some who posit that it was
deliberately alienating fans of the first movie

Phillips and star Joaquin Phoenix have said they aspired to make something as ‘audacious’ as the first film.

The sequel added Lady Gaga into the fold , as a Joker superfan, and
delved further into the mind of Arthur Fleck, imprisoned at Arkham
and awaiting trial for the murders he committed in the first.
It´s also a musical, with elaborately imagined song and dance numbers to old standards.

Gaga even released a companion album called ”Harlequin,’ alongside the film.

The sequel has already been the subject of many think pieces,
some who posit that it was deliberately alienating fans of the first movie.
In cruder terms, it´s been called a ‘middle finger.’ But fans often ignore the advice of critics,
especially when it comes to opening their wallets to see revered comic book characters on the big screen.

‘They took a swing for the fences,’ Dergarabedian said.
‘But except for a couple of outliers, audiences in 2024 seem to want to know what
they´re getting when they´re going to the theater.

They want the tried and true, the familiar.’ 

Deadline editor Anthony D´Alessandro thinks the problem
started with the idea to make the Joker sequel a musical.

‘No fan of the original movie wanted to see a musical sequel,’ he wrote
on Saturday.

The first film was also divisive and the subject of much discourse, then about whether
it might send the wrong message to the wrong type of person. And yet people still flocked
to see what the fuss was about. Joker went on to pick up 11 Oscar nominations, including best picture and best director, and three wins.
It also made over $1 billion and was the highest-grossing R-rated film of all time, until this summer when Marvel’s Deadpool &
Wolverine took the crown.

Estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at U.S.
and Canadian theaters, according to Comscore. Final domestic figures will be released Monday.

She also said that the album has a ‘darker pop’

fun and meant to be enjoyed at a party, in a club,
or at home having personal fun time — to be free

flop will just be a small blip in her career, after the film received a D rating on CinemaScore
— the lowest score for a comic book movie. 

Madame Web — which notably also flopped in theaters earlier this year and also

Joker notably opened with $96.2 million on its theater release in 2019 and eventually took a little over $1 billion in the global box office. 

The first movie – which was also directed by Phillips – had a budget of between $55 and
$70 million. However, the budget more than doubled to around $200 million for
Folie À Deux. 

The sequel screened during the Venice International Film Festival last month, where it earned a 12-minute standing
ovation, per Deadline.   

It had been projected to bring in around $70 million – but the number
drastically dropped amid mixed reviews before release. 

Audiences have since shared their opinions on the sequel, which features multiple musical sequences. 

‘Joaquin Phoenix don’t deserve this,’ wrote one on X. ‘What

A Warner Bros. spokesperson responded to the report, saying ‘Any estimates
suggested by anonymous “insiders” or “rival executives” are grossly wrong and continues a
trend where rumor is reported as fact.’

‘The film continues to play in theatrical release, included with this week’s opening in China,
and will continue to earn revenue throughout its home viewing and ancillary run.’

So far, the musical about Batman’s nemesis has grossed $51.5 million domestically and $165 million globally after two weeks of release.

In comparison, the first Joker grossed $96.2 million domestically and $248.4 million globally
after three days of release.

The hotly-anticipated sequel to the 2019 billion dollar Oscar-winning
film was considered a surefire hit for Warner Bros Pictures,
yet ended up being slammed by critics and failed to ignite at

Joker: Folie À Deux has garnered the lowest CinemaScore in comic
book movie history as the film bombed at the box office

In an apparent snub by Phillips, the opening sequence of the film does not include a DC
Studios logo.

A Warner spokesman added that a DC logo appears at the end of the
Joker sequel, while Phillips declined to comment to the
publication.

Several frictions are said to have developed between Phillips, DC
and Warner- with claims that Michael DeLuca, Chairperson of Warner Bros.
Entertainment, and CEO Pamela Abdy seemed ‘unwilling’ to say no to Phillips due to his huge past successes.

It is claimed Phillips would ‘only’ speak with DeLuca and
Abdy rather than Gunn and Safran – who took control of DC two months before production began on Joker 2 in December
2022.

Gunn and Safran did attend the first director’s cut
screening for the studio but Phillips fueled rift speculation when he told a reporter: ‘With
all due respect to them, this is kind of a Warner Bros.
movie.’

Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav also met with Phillips shortly
after WarnerMedia and Discovery merged in April 2022 and was ‘open to filming in Los Angeles if the director would make the sequel at a lower price point.’

The studio wanted to film in London which would have cost around 20 per cent less.

A source directly involved with the film recently shared:
‘The one thing about genre stuff: If you don’t listen and pay attention to what the fan expectations are, you’re going to fail’; director Todd Phillips

However, Phillips insisted on filming in LA with the
budget remaining static.

A Warner spokesman told the publication the studio ‘supported the decision to film in Los Angeles’.

Kamala Harris and Donald Trump are asking voter to choose between an immigration crackdown and reproductive rights

As their race for the US presidency comes down to the wire, each major candidate
has leaned heavily on a favorite theme — abortion rights for Democrat
Kamala Harris and border security for Republican Donald Trump.

In Arizona, their ideological duel has reached a white-hot
peak, with both topics the subject of fiercely debated
ballot referendums.

And in this key southwestern state — where the billionaire Trump lost
to President Joe Biden in 2020 by a tiny margin of about 10,500 votes — every ballot truly will count.

In the mid-sized city of Tucson, hundreds of volunteers in orange T-shirts were going door-to-door to try to persuade voters to back a ballot measure to inscribe abortion rights in the state constitution — and, while they’re at it, to vote for Vice President Harris.

To Grace Ireland, a 26-year-old activist, the abortion restrictions
imposed by several Republican-controlled states amount to “a public health crisis that Donald Trump and the Republicans have created.”

She added, “Democrats and Kamala Harris are trying to push us forward and protect women’s health care and protect our democracy and protect all people.”

Since 2022, when the US Supreme Court ended the
constitutional protection of federal abortion rights,
Ireland, a registered nurse, has worked in several states where abortion is banned or severely limited.

Those restrictions have had sometimes disastrous consequences
for women having problem pregnancies or carrying nonviable fetuses when doctors refuse to treat them.

“Women are going septic and dying because they cannot receive the care that they need,” she

she noted, particularly to young people who may be less likely to vote,
that it was Donald Trump who appointed the three
justices who tipped the Supreme Court against abortion rights.

“It’s important to reiterate that Donald Trump and these abortion bans are one and the same,” Ireland said.

But in Tucson there is little unanimity among young voters.

“I do think that abortion is murder,” said Pedro Lopez, a 20-year-old college student.

“There are cases of incest or rape” that merit exceptions,
he conceded, “but that’s very small.”

He also worries about the flow of undocumented migrants that have entered the country from Mexico during the Biden-Harris administration.

“People that are entering the United States illegally… should be sent back to where they came from,” he

“My grandparents migrated from Mexico to the United States, and they did it the right way.”

So he plans not only to vote for Trump, but to back the proposal to let local law enforcement detain, arrest
and prosecute anyone suspected of having entered the country illegally — powers normally reserved to

“I know people that work for the Border Patrol, and they’re really upset because this current administration has really tied their hands up. They’re not really able to do anything,” Lopez said.

The major political parties see the competing referendums as offering an opportunity to mobilize more people to vote

But the referendums may not have the clear impact
on the race for the White House that activists hope.

Polls show Trump and Harris running neck-and-neck in Arizona, with the Republican holding a very narrow lead.

Both ballot questions, meantime, have drawn strong support and both
appear likely to pass.

So the abortion issue may not be “helping Democrats in the way that they would hope,” said Jenny Brian, a professor of bioethics at Arizona
State University.

Many Republican women will vote both to protect
abortion rights and to bring Trump back to the White House, Brian said.

Though abortion is sometimes framed as a Democrat vs.
Republican issue, the Republican Party includes “a broad spectrum of views on the topic,” an issue that also raises conservatives’
concerns about “government interference,” she added.

The same dynamic applies to immigration, with the tougher language on the Arizona ballot question finding support not just among Trump Republicans but also “moderates and even many Democrats,” said
John Kavanagh, a Republican and an Arizona state senator.

The 74-year-old Kavanagh is unimpressed by Harris’s
recent toughening on migration, specifically her promise to maintain the partial closing of the border Biden ordered in recent months.

The vice president, Kavanagh said, is “running away faster from her open-border policy than an illegal immigrant that runs away from the Border Patrol.”

Despite the raciness of the content he had just read from his
daughter’s book, Tony admitted he was not shocked
by the revelations.

‘Am I amazed? Probably not,’ he said.

‘I’m sort of trying to take all of this in. After all, its my daughter we’re talking about.
If it was somebody else, it would be a different story altogether.
I’d be so excited.

‘I’ve been round the block a few times. I understand how these things happen.’

Another passage in the book revealed a very awkward encounter between Phil’s male flatmate and Jackie’s mother Julie. 

‘My mum came over once and when no one answered
the door, she put her face to the screen to see inside and that flatmate was right
there in the living room, pants down, w***ing,

The revelations come after Jackie spoke for the first time about her years-long battle with drugs which saw her secretly go
to rehab at The Betty Ford Clinic in November in 2022.

During a tearful on-air admission, Jackie said at the height of her
addiction, she took around 10-12 Stilnox/Ambien sleeping
pills and 24 Panadeine Forte painkillers a day.

in another Mayfair backstreet. But a £2,000 a year membership fee proved hard to swallow, meaning the doors were opened to the great
unwashed.

Which is how we find ourselves sitting in a rather handsome – albeit near empty – dining room, lusciously lavish, under the
stern gaze of a stern painting of a very stern man. The soft, crepuscular gloom is broken up by the glare of table lamps, indecorously bright, while a loud soundtrack
of indolent, indeterminate beats throbs in the background.
The whole place is scented with gilded ennui.

Our fellow diners are two young South Korean women of pale, luminescent beauty, clad in diaphanous couture.
They don’t speak, rather communicate entirely via camera phone.
Pose, click, check, filter, post. Immaculate waiters hover in the shadows.

We sip ice-cold vodka, and eat a £77 caviar and smoked-salmon Kaspia croque monsieur that tastes far better than it ought to.

Next door, a large table fills with a glut of the noisily, glossily confident.

We’re looked after by a wonderful French lady of such effervescent charm and charisma that had she burst into an impromptu performance of ‘Willkommen’, we would have barely blinked.
Baked potatoes, skin as crisp as parchment, insides whipped savagely hard with butter and sour cream, are a
study in tuber art. A cool jet-black splodge of oscietra caviar,
gently saline, raises them to the sublime. Only
the price, at just under £150 each, is ridiculous.
But there are few better dishes on earth. I’d
eat this every day if I could. But I can’t. Obviously. That’s
the problem with caviar. One taste is never enough.

All six senior members of the new federal anti-corruption watchdog have
accepted Qantas Chairman’s Lounge memberships as calls grow to refer Anthony Albanese over the perks he
took from the airline. 

Gift disclosure logs for the National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC) leadership positions show commissioners are all part of Australia’s ‘most exclusive club’ the Chairman’s Lounge membership extended by invite only
by the Qantas chair.

This has raised concerns over how impartial the body would be when dealing with
Qantas matters. 

If Mr Albanese has requested flight upgrades from former Qantas CEO
Alan Joyce directly, as reported in a new book, he may have fallen foul
of the strict Ministerial Code of Conduct which prohibits ministers from seeking ‘any kind of benefit’ 

Commissioner Paul Brereton declared Chairman’s Lounge membership in 2023,
as did the CEO Philip Reed and deputy commissioners Jaala Hinchcliffe and
Nicole Rose, Sky News reported on Wednesday. 

Deputy commissioners Ben Gauntlett and Kylie Kilgour declared their membership in February 2024, which
means it was after the NACC began operation in July 2023.

out the requirements to serve the high and mighty

Applicants must ‘have experience working in a fine dining
environment and the ability to work a seven- day rotating roster.

The claims Albanese received 22 upgrades from economy when booking Qantas
flight by personally requesting them from Mr Joyce are made
in a new book The Chairman’s Lounge by former Australian Financial Review columnist Joe Aston. 

Aston alleged Mr Albanese directly contacted Mr Joyce while in his various parliamentary jobs, which included Minister
for Transport to ask for special upgrades that only the CEO could
dole out for himself or his family.

According to unnamed Qantas ‘insiders’ 11 of the 22 flights Mr Albanese received upgrades
for were ‘privately funded’ and included overseas trips to Rome,
London, Los Angeles and Honolulu.

The book also revealed that as well as son Nathan having a ‘plus one’ Chairman’s Lounge membership Mr Albanese’s partner Jodie Haydon did as well. 

Mr Albanese insisted on Tuesday that all were ‘declared
in the appropriate way’.

Throughout the book she mentions her working relationship with Vogue and its longtime
top editor Anna Wintour. 

These days Wintour is actively supporting former President Donald Trump’s Democratic
rival, Vice President Kamala Harris.

The former first lady said she never felt shame about posing nude but
was angered that her nude modeling photos were used to try to hurt her husband’s first presidential campaign 

‘I believed then, as I do now, that women should take pride

said. ‘To me, those images were artistic and tasteful,
fitting for a publication like Max, which showcased many
renowned super-models.’

But there was another problem with the photographer selling
